The Alaska Laborers Training School accepts applications year round to apply for the apprenticeship program. Interviews are given twice a year.

The Alaska Laborers Training School

Laborer’s Apprentices are referred to a contractor’s jobsite for on-the-job training in conjunction with receiving instruction at our school. Matters pertaining to 1st Aid / CPR, job safety and health, and task-specific special skills will be addressed in training sessions at the Laborers Training School. The Apprentices then put these practices to use on job sites, as labor and management work together to develop highly skilled and productive construction workers.

Official Recognition

On July 6, 1994, the U.S. Department of Labor, Apprenticeship, Training, Employment and Labor Services approved the Laborers’ AGC’ National Apprenticeship Standards for Construction Craft Laborers. In keeping with the national standards, the Alaska Laborers Training Trust has established an Apprenticeship Program for Laborers in the State of Alaska.

The Program dispenses & accepts applications year round, and conducts interviews on an as needed basis. Please check with us for projected future interview dates.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Must be a high school graduate or have a certificate of equivalency (GED).

Must have reading / language comprehension sufficient to perform the work of the occupation.

Must have a valid Alaskan Driver’s License.

Must have been an Alaskan resident for the last twelve (12) consecutive months.

The Alaska Laborers' Construction Training School provides training and retraining for those entering the industry and those already in the industry.

Check in: Report to the training school at 7:45 a.m. on the morning your class begins.

Appropriate Dress: Report to the training school as if you were going to work on a job site. Work boots and work clothes are appropriate.

Room and Board: Free room and board is available for those members who live outside of Anchorage. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served for those residing at the Training School. Please bring your own soap and shampoo. Towels, sheets, blankets, pillows are provided.

Cancellations: If for some reason, you cannot attend the class, please call and let us know. There are many members who would like a chance to use our training school. Call 345-3853 or 272-4571 to cancel.

Technical Information

Screening & Selection
Those who submit completed applications that meet the eligibility requirements will be given a reading comprehension and a math test. The next step is to be interviewed by a selection committee which will rate each applicant on factors including, but not limited to: Educational transcripts and personal references; Previous work experience and interest in the trade; and their sense of responsibility and attitude toward Apprenticeship.

Terms of Apprenticeship
The Apprenticeship Program is designed to achieve journeyman status in approximately three (3) years, depending upon completion of the following:

• A minimum of 4,000 hours of an-the-job training covering all reflecting the various aspects of the Laborer’s craft—highway, building, utility and specialty construction.

• A minimum of 144 hours yearly of related classroom and hands-on instruction in technical and theoretical subjects to supplement and reinforce on-the-job training.

Probationary Period
Apprentices are subject to a probationary period of the first 1,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Previous Experience
Applicants with previous experience in the trade, who submit appropriate documentation, may be able to begin the program at an advanced state. The committee will determine if credit may be given for prior OJT and related training hours.

Apprenticeship Wages
Apprentices will be paid in accordance with the number of on-the-job hours accumulated, as a percentage of the Journey worker rate of pay:

On-The Job Training
During the term of the Apprenticeship, each Apprentice will receive 1,000 hours of experience in each of the various facets of the Laborers’ craft: Utility Construction, Highway Construction, Building Construction, and Specialty Construction.

• North Slope Training (NSTC) is offered monthly in Anchorage & Fairbanks. Sign up at local unions for classes. This training is required for pipeline work. Initial 8 hours plus yearly renewals.

• Flagging certificates need to be renewed every four years. (Also worksite traffic supervisors).

• Mining Safety & Health (MSHA) classes are required for people working at gravel pits. Two days initial training plus yearly renewals.

• Plumber Utility certificate—Pipe layers with at least 1000 hours installing water, sewer, or storm lines can verify and apply to take a test with IDOL to gain a plumber utility certificate. It’s good for 2 years and is required for work on private property. Call us to get more information about this certificate and what to study.

• Drilling Training may be available at different times this training season. Please indicate, to an agent, if you are interested or need it for work.

• Training programs not listed on this schedule and that members need for work, must be pre-approved prior to training for reimbursement.

• PLEASE contact your local union regarding First Aid classes and additional classes offered on an as needed basis throughout the year.

• Unless otherwise noted all classes start at 8:00 A.M. and will end at 5:00 P.M.
